Dunmanway town was established in 1693 and was a centre for the production of flax and linen for many centuries, beingthe main product produced there in the 1800’s. There is an annual horse race and fair called Ballabuidhe which dates back over 400 years. Dunmanway Historical and Cultural Association was established in 2003 to preserve and present the towns rich heritage for future generations. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 am to 5pm.
The centre is a treasure throve of old books, photos, memorabilia from times past including both Sam Maguire’s birth anddeath certificates and also the last letter written by Padraig Pearse to his mother before he was executed.

Dunmanway Railway Station was on the West Cork Railway Lineand the last train left here in April 1961. Duffy’s Circus wintered in Dunmanway for a number of years and one of their elephants attempted to go for a pint and got stuck in a doorway in a Dunmanway house.
