SAM MAGUIRE'S Bells
St. Mary’s Church and the Sam Maguire Community Bells. In 2016, following centenary celebrations of the 1916 Rising, St. Mary’s Church of Ireland decided to look at ways to commemorate Sam Maguire; the legendary sportsman and patriot who is buried in their churchyard in Dunmanway, Co. Cork.
They decided to install Sam Maguire Community Bells in the tower of St. Mary’s Church. Each of the eight bells wasgiven a theme, through which they tell the story of the life and times of Sam Maguire, the man behind the cup.
The bells were installed in the tower during the summer of 2017, 90 years after his death. One of the main aims of this project is to provide an amenity that can be enjoyed by visitors to the hometown of Sam Maguire. They are now ready for visitors to come and hear the story of Sam Maguire while having fun learning to ring a few tunes of the Sam Maguire Community Bells.
They welcome school and coach tours, as well as families and individuals to come and join in for a guided tour including a selection of short information videos about the history of Sam Maguire, the purpose and installation of the bells and their connection to the GAA. This visitor experience is suitable for people of all ages and is open everyday in July and August from 12noon to 4pm. Group bookings by arrangement to [email protected].
