HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION
Description:
Experience a blast from the past at Dunmanway's very own historic society. Established in 2003 to preserve and present the towns rich heritage for future generations. The market town of Dunmanway town was established in 1693 by Sir Richard Cox and was a centre for the production of flax and linen for many centuries, being the main product produced here in the 1800’s.
The centre is a treasure throve of old books, photos, memorabilia from times past including both Sam Maguire’s birth and death certificates and also the last letter written by Padraig Pearse to his mother before he was executed.
Dunmanway had many volunteers in World War 1 and unfortunately 43 of these men lost their lives. Dunmanway Railway Station was on the West Cork Railway Line and the last train left here in April 1961. Duffy’s Circus wintered in Dunmanway for a number of years and one of their elephants attempted to go for a pint and also got stuck in a doorway in a Dunmanway house.
